If a team forfeits, or doesn't show for their game, you should do your best to find a replacement team so that a team doesn't miss out on playing their games.
This may happen before the league starts (by the office), or at the field (by a referee, umpire or supervisor). As an incentive to pick up an extra game, the game counts and can help the team that picks up the extra game in the standings.
In this case, picking up a game can help them, but not hurt.
For example:
Team A picks up an extra game.
Before picking up the game, they were 3-2. This gives them 6 standings points.
If they win, they are not 4-2 and have 8 standings points.
If they lose, they are 3-3, but still have 6 standings points, so the loss has not affected their standing.
The team would have won by forfeit does not have the option to not play the new opponent and take the forfeit win. The opponent has simply been changed.
